POETRY: "Ancient Tongues, Two Versions"

Back in 2003, I was given a challenge, via a writer's group to which I belonged, to write a poem that did not make use of the letter, "A", at all.  I didn't quite make it, but I was happy with the outcome.  (It was just for fun.)

Version A

To speak in ancient tongues again,
To dance with my Ancestors!
These are impulses lost, for sure,
But they will be found again!

To live in ancient towns again,
To tell stories by the fire!
These are habits lost, for sure,
But they will be found again!

I am ancient, and I am modern.
I am the Dance, and I am the Fire.
I am my Ancestors!
I am found, I am re-born.

Version B

To intone in tongues of old once more,
In step with those who've gone before!
These are impulses lost, for sure,
But I know they will be found once more!

To live my life in towns of old,
Our stories 'round the fire retold!
These are customs lost, too old,
It's up to us to restore them, I'm told.

Outmoded. Modern.
Movement. Fire.
I, my predecessors.

Returned! Reborn!
